Description

One of the most popular shopping centers in Istanbul is ATLASPARK AVM. It is a meeting place with shops, entertainment places and different dining options. ATLASPARK chosen by many brands and the people selected the Active AVM Engineering experience.

Client’s Complaint:

User complaints have arisen due to frequent failures in loads that are fed from the low voltage panel in the shopping mall. ATLASPARK AVM technical team and management have also communicated with the Active Engineering power quality department, which is an expert in this field. According to checks and the measurements of the power quality, it is seen that the LED lighting load fed from this driver panel produces high harmonics. The voltage between neutral ground is measured at 45-50 volts because of this created harmonic level. Our power quality department produced a related solution.

The Implementation:

As a result of simulation with ABB PQF Size program, it is predicted that 1 PQFS series 45A active filter should be applied for the problem point. The performance results of the active filter application are compared below.

Before Active Filter Application

Voltage Harmonic Measurements

As can be seen, the THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) ratio on the line before the application of Active Filter is at the level of 21.59%. This ratio is too high according to standard.

Current Harmonic Measurements

It is also noted here that the current THD ratio is 38.47%. In our review, the Power Quality Department, which caused this high harmonic level LED lighting group, was detected by our Department. It was decided that a 45 Amps Active Filter application would be appropriate.

Voltage Harmonic Measurements

In this chart, you can see the voltage change effect on THD ratio at the first moment when the 45 Amp Active Filter application is included in the system. THD falls in a short period of time like 2-3 minutes.

Current Harmonic Measurements

You can follow the drop of the current load on the line in this 2-3 minute transition period graphically. This reduction in the effect of overheating and malfunction is very important for network health.

After Active Filter Application

Voltage Harmonic Measurements

After application, the voltage THD at the time of stabilizing operation falls from 21.59% to 4.21%. It is observed that the limit in the standard is fixed very low.

Current Harmonic Measurements

From this graph, it is seen that the current THD ratio which increases the current load is reduced to the level of 38,47% to 8,51%.

Result:

Semiconductor technology used in lighting supplies in extensively used areas of LED lighting produces harmonics to an extreme extent. It is causes that malfunction of devices operating on the network and overheating of the cable lines. Thanks to the active filter application of 45 Amps used after measurements and tests, the harmonic values are reduced to the limits stated in international and national standards. It also reduces the neutral – earth voltage seen by a simple voltmeter from 50 volts to 2 volts. The application has been successfully integrated.
