To improve energy quality, ensure component safety, and maintain energy continuity against transient overcurrent and voltage disturbances, LV and HV passive filter circuits are used. These circuits consist of R, L, and C components. Filter resistors are designed and manufactured based on their purpose and the type of circuit they belong to.
In electrical networks, short-term voltage fluctuations occur during the activation of inductive loads such as shunt reactors, power transformers, and high-power motors, and especially during the operation of loads like arc furnaces, which operate on a continuous short-circuit principle. Voltage protection relays may perceive these transient voltage fluctuations as a fault and unintentionally disconnect the load. Additionally, these excessive voltage fluctuations strain the insulation of all loads in the network, causing lifespan reduction and even severe failures.
To dampen transient voltage fluctuations during the activation of such inductive loads, snubber capacitors, which prevent sudden voltage changes, and series-connected snubber resistors are used. RC snubber filters are connected in parallel to the network as close as possible to the load causing the transient voltage fluctuations. During high-frequency transient voltage fluctuations, RC filters exhibit low impedance, preventing excessive voltage rise in the network and ensuring rapid cessation of oscillations.
