The intended use of Marine Braking Resistors is essentially the same as normal braking resistors. Braking resistors are used to ensure that electric motors controlled by drives (speed control devices) stop, reduce speed or control in a short time. Marine braking resistors are expected to have some extra features due to the place of use.
The design of the component to be used in offshore applications and the selection of the materials to be used in this component are very important. Because products resistant to harsh environmental conditions such as corrosive sea water, salty atmosphere, extreme wind and rain are needed. The difference of marine braking resistors is that they have these features.
To protect against the effects of the above harsh conditions, the cabinets of marine braking resistors are manufactured from AISI 316L steel, which has high corrosion resistance and is ideal for offshore applications. The degree of protection for the terminal box is IP65.
The cabin is designed to withstand the forces from maneuvers such as strong wind loads, if it is exposed to them, or maneuvers such as a ship tilting forward, sideways, backward and turning. There are also extra size restrictions for equipment to be used on ships. The product must be both durable and compact.
The resistor element inside the cabinet and the insulation materials that isolate the cabinet and these resistor elements from each other are also exposed to the salty atmosphere and deform faster. Therefore, electrical insulation is very important for marine braking resistors. In addition, due to the sensitive nature of electrical installations on board ships, earth leakage currents must be very low. In order to overcome this problem, double insulation is applied in marine braking resistors.
