What is an Active Harmonic Filter?
An Active Harmonic Filter (AHF) is an electronic system that detects harmonic disturbances in the grid and eliminates them by injecting corrective current in the opposite phase. Active harmonic filter systems automatically detect and filter harmonics up to a frequency of 2.5 kHz. Additionally, filtering can be performed for specific harmonics selected through the control system. It can filter up to the 50th harmonic.
What is the operating principle of an active harmonic filter?
The system, which operates with an IGBT-based inverter structure:
- Continuously monitors the current in the grid
- Analyzes harmonic components (e.g., 5th, 7th, 11th, 13th, etc.) in real time
- Generates corrective current of the same magnitude in the opposite phase
- Separate filtering can be performed on each phase and neutral
- Response time: ≤ 10 ms
- Also provides low-level reactive power compensation
